Stage 1 Consciousness - Suffering
Nothing works
I’m so overwhelmed
Why me?
I’m so alone
No one else feels like this
It’s never going to end
I’m so helpless
It’s hopeless
I’m broken
I’m doomed
I’m the only one
Ever uttered any of those statements in your life or asked those questions? These are classic statements for the helpless felt by someone who is suffering. And no one wants to suffer.
So instead of suffering, we disconnect, we check out, we find another way of not experiencing our body.
It’s actually a physiological response called the Freeze response (part of Fight, Flight, Freeze triad), and the purpose of this response is to numb the body to whatever is going on. This is an evolutionary strategy to a life-death situation, designed as a last ditch attempt to survive. Some of us have events in our life that were life threatening, but more often our body has interpreted stressful situations in this way, so we have disconnected from parts of our body to disconnect from the overwhelm that was too much for us to handle.
I have yet to work with anyone who does not have some degree of disconnection in their body.
So we use the Stage 1 exercise to acknowledge that sometimes we feel disconnected, sometimes we feel overwhelmed, sometimes it feels like nothing works, sometimes it feels like we’re all alone/the only one, and by acknowledging this, our body can start to process these feelings and return to a healthier physiological state.
And for those of you that know the Stage 1 exercise, a bit part of that exercise is about finding resources in the body. Finding peace, finding ease, finding power, and once we know where these resources are, we can amplify them and then use them to help to wake up the areas we have disconnected from.
If you don’t know how to do this and want to learn, you can join our online program (21 days free) where this is taught step by step.
If you’re already part of the program, keep revisiting stage 1 and improve your connection to your inner resources.
